A unique and invaluable opportunity
As a finance undergraduate, I was searching for a summer internship that would bridge academic theory with real-world application. My decision to join RSK for this immersive experience in Abu Dhabi was a deliberate one, perfectly aligning with my studies in corporate finance, accounting and financial modelling. While RSK is renowned globally as a leading environmental consultancy, its vast scale, with operations across the Middle East from its Abu Dhabi hub (including Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Dubai), meant a robust and sophisticated finance function was essential. This presented a unique and invaluable opportunity to understand the intricate financial operations of a dynamic multinational corporation, a far cry from textbook examples and an ideal environment to apply my classroom knowledge.
I gained invaluable hands-on experience
My time at RSK in Abu Dhabi was marked by engaging tasks and projects that provided unparalleled insight into the company’s financial heartbeat. The most compelling aspect was my direct involvement in financial analysis for various regional businesses. This wasn’t about abstract calculations; it involved meticulously dissecting complex data sets, analysing revenue streams, examining cost centres and evaluating profitability metrics to unearth trends. The true reward lay in transforming raw numbers into actionable intelligence that directly informed strategic decisions for our Middle Eastern operations.
A unique and stimulating challenge was being solely responsible for the analysis and preparation of carbon reports for specific frameworks. While it was initially surprising to be assigned this task as a finance intern, it highlighted the critical and accelerating convergence of financial performance with environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations. Understanding how environmental data translates into quantifiable financial metrics and compliance reporting was a steep but incredibly rewarding learning curve. I also gained invaluable hands-on experience supporting internal auditing, assisting with reconciliations and verifying financial transactions. This provided a crucial deep dive into the practical application of internal controls and regulatory compliance within a large-scale multinational enterprise. Even the seemingly routine task of credit card reconciliation proved fundamental, honing my attention to detail in record-keeping and expense categorisation and revealing the initial flow of financial data within the company.
The practical experience at RSK differed profoundly from my university learning
While my courses provided a strong theoretical foundation, the corporate environment presented financial problems with far greater complexity, ambiguity and interconnectedness. I quickly learned that real-world financial data is rarely pristine, often requiring careful interpretation and creative problem-solving beyond formulaic applications. Financial analysis, for instance, demanded a nuanced understanding of underlying operational dynamics and market influences, not just model application.
Beyond solidifying my expected accounting and analysis skills, I gained several unforeseen proficiencies. The most significant was the development of my data automation and system-building capabilities. Tackling the challenge of streamlining the carbon reporting process from a vast, disparate data set into an efficient, automated system was a pivotal learning experience. Witnessing my solution successfully implemented by the company, with plans for its continued use, provided immense satisfaction and tangible validation of my work. This taught me to not only perform tasks but also innovate and actively improve financial processes.
My internship at RSK in Abu Dhabi fundamentally reshaped my perspective on the finance industry
Prior to this, my vision of finance was largely confined to traditional banking or investment roles. However, working within a global consultancy underscored the ubiquity and critical importance of robust financial functions across every industry sector. It highlighted how financial decisions underpin even highly specialised services such as environmental consulting. The experience also illuminated the accelerating convergence of financial performance with ESG factors, especially through the hands-on carbon reporting work. I now view finance as a dynamic force for sustainable business practices, not just profit generation, broadening my career aspirations significantly.
In my view, what makes RSK an exceptional place for students seeking internships is its global scale combined with a hands-on, integrated team approach.
The opportunity to work closely with senior professionals and contribute directly to critical functions for diverse operations – whether in finance, environmental science, engineering or other fields – is invaluable. The emphasis on practical application, coupled with exposure to innovative areas across RSK’s multidisciplinary service offerings, creates an ideal environment for students. It’s a place where academic knowledge is truly integrated with meaningful, real-world experience in a global context, enabling students to shape their professional trajectory and reinforce their commitment to their chosen career path.
