As part of RSK’s ongoing commitment to improving safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) performance, Regional HSE Manager Al Fahad Mohamed recently visited the company’s operations in Iraq
This visit aimed to support the local team in maintaining safety standards, strengthen compliance with both client and internal requirements and reinforce a proactive safety culture across field operations. Fahad has over 15 years of experience working in high-risk environments. During his on-site visit, he provided a structured and practical review of operations, from evaluating risk assessments to engaging directly with team members. His presence was highly valued, and the visit strongly emphasised knowledge transfer and operational improvement.
Training and awareness for a range of operational areas
This included the main yard, chemical storage units, laboratories, and processing facilities, such as the sewage treatment plant and pyrolysis unit. He reviewed housekeeping conditions, access controls, chemical handling procedures and emergency arrangements. Particular attention was given to reviewing job hazard analyses (JHA) and job safety analyses (JSA) for live activities, ensuring that risks were being correctly identified and managed.
In addition to site-level safety, the visit also addressed broader topics such as worker welfare. Through inspections and informal conversations, Fahad assessed the quality of accommodation, hygiene facilities, hydration availability and access to medical support. Based on these observations, a tailored worker welfare management plan is being developed to formalise expectations and promote continuous improvement.
Training and awareness were other key focus areas. Fahad led toolbox talks and delivered sessions on RSK’s Golden Safety Rules, as well as the client-mandated life-saving rules. These engagements were structured to drive awareness, accountability and a culture of shared responsibility. Targeted training on manual handling and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage was also conducted to reiterate safe practices for specific job tasks.
Emergency preparedness was evaluated through mock drills simulating scenarios such as fires and chemical spills. These exercises tested response plans and communication protocols, providing valuable learning points to strengthen response readiness. Security procedures and access controls were also reviewed in line with corporate and local requirements.
Fahad also had the opportunity to engage with many of our clients. These interactions allowed for open discussions on performance, challenges and alignment with broader HSE strategies.
